Hui O Waʻa Kaulua
seeks to perpetuate Hawaiian voyaging, wayfinding, and culture through various educational programs.
Our programs are currently focused on two community needs identified in schools and which we observe in students who attend our programs:
-
Our hands-on programs introduce students to science by exciting them with the practical science of voyaging.
-
Our educational programs offer training in traditional practices, using traditional mentoring as a method of teaching.
The waʻa kaulua (double hull canoe) becomes a “living classroom” to engage students not only in skill building, but also in the effective practice of traditional Hawaiian behavior norms and beliefs such as: laulima cooperation, kokua helping, poʻokela excellence, hoʻohana management, mālama ‘āina caring for the land, ‘ohana valuing relationships, kuleana responsibility, hoʻokipa hospitality, ‘onipaʻa steadfastness and hoʻomau pursuing despite hardship.

The Nature Conservancy
Waikamoi Preserve Hike Experience
The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. TNC has been working in Hawaiʻi for nearly 40 years. We work to preserve the remaining native forested watersheds that are the source of freshwater in these islands. These forests are the only home for many endangered native birds and other plants and animals.
We also work with local communities around the state to increase abundance and resilience of nearshore coastlines and coral reefs.
‘Ao‘ao O Nā Loko I‘a O Maui
‘Ao‘ao O Nā Loko I‘a O Maui is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to revitalizing Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond in South Maui and educating our community about its importance within the Hawaiian culture and environment. Since 1998, we have provided free educational presentations to schools and community organizations and we have worked with community volunteers to restore and maintain its ancient walls. Our volunteers help us with revitalizing this ancient treasure.
